Teaching through sacrifice
Often when you are a leader, innovator, or explorer you will run into the obstacles and mishaps before others, and the people who follow can better judge their own footfalls.
On one of our first bodyboarding outings in Maui, Karina played this wayfinder role for the family.
While riding a wave break, too close to the shore, and too close to break, her nose paid the ocean’s tithe.
While watching an ungodly amount of blood pour into the water, much to the horror of the rest of us, I assumed that the nose must in fact be broken to bleed so much.
Luckily after a few ice packs, and a bit of rest, the holiday was not ruined, and we all came out a bit wiser.
“Thank god it was me and not the girls”, Karina quipped, and I concurred.
In life we have many opportunities to learn through others’ misfortune. When we are attentive and intelligent we can use the good side of fear, to pave a safer way to protect our bodies, or bank accounts.
Observe and learn fast.
Now that’s a peak ethos.
