Sticky Rice

It took a bit of explanation when Hazel’s best friend's family introduced me to a Filipino delicacy known as ‘sticky rice’. Hazel’s friend was having a birthday party and in hospitable Filipino fashion, this was one of many foods pushed upon me.

Do I eat the banana leaf? Is it a dessert?

After the initial convincing, and getting used to the interesting texture and flavour, I was hooked.

One led to two, two turned into four, and when Karina finally picked the girls up, the family was announcing that I had eaten all the sticky rice, a reputation that has stuck with me since.

"The guy who ate all the sticky rice”.

While I dispute the truth of the allegations I did learn my lesson last week when the same birthday party presented itself. I was able to connect with ‘sticky rice’ again, and this time I restrained myself to one piece… or maybe two.

Variety is the spice of life, and experimentation is the best way to get there.

Sticky rice is amazing, but discipline may be required.
