Injury

This morning I stumbled upon an aviation article celebrating Jessica Cox, an ‘armless’ airplane pilot. Born without arms, this resilient lady is able to pilot an aircraft using only her feet.

This article was particularly timely as I was feeling self-pity about a hyperextended elbow injury received during Jiu Jitsu this week.

I can’t say I loved the audible ‘popping’ sound that resonated when a large black belt shocked me with a lightning fast armbar, nor did I love the instant fear and panic associated with the pain.

“Is it broken?”

“Will I be able to train?”

“Did this stupidity just ruin the next few weeks?”

As anyone who has experienced injury knows, limitations to the use of our bodies is scary, debilitating, and throws a curveball into our daily routines.

It turns out that my elbow injury was minor, and life has continued as usual.

My appreciation for good health, however, is at an all time high.

The threat of losing bodily function instills a deep sense of gratitude for what we have.

And seeing someone flying airplanes without any arms, was the ultimate reminder of how fortunate I am.

  • Now that’s a peak ethos.
